That you would say is the most representing of what the grateful dead is all about...a sort of "trademark song " if you will....??? 2 that come to mind for me but among some others i am yet to make a final choice, are Jack Straw and The Wheel! not to say that the choice Ya'll have made arent worth merit as they all make a great point.....

If you had just to pick one it would HAVE to be Eyes, hands down. Then again you'd be a total fool to just pick one.

Well, there are so many good choices, as outlined by the responses above...for me personally, it is a slam dunk: StSt.

It is one of their top songs musically...it contains all the elements I associate with their best efforts. First, Jerry's voice is great--in part because I pick the early era representations, like June of 68. Second, it has the lyrics that encompass all of the complexities and nuance and so and so forth that is "Hunter" in his fullest and most accomplished period of writing, IMHO. The amazing imagery, story telling aspect--the poetic, laid back interlude in the mid-section, and throwing in the WT bridge (of course!!!) makes this an amazing piece of writing. Third, the showcasing of Jerry's leads, the interplay of the bass, and most important of all, FOURTH, and something I fall to describe appropriately every time, is the style in which they have abrupt, intense, high energy stops and starts, or transitions...musically, I am at a loss to describe it, but you all know what I mean, I assume...the energy behind these shifts, and stops/starts is what grabs all of us in their songs of this sort (which are few and far between, but critical when live?), I think...

I know other songs will be more easily depicted as "typifying" the boys, but for me, StSt is the ONE. And of course, if I select 6-14-68, 10-12-68, Aox studio, 3-2-69, and 9-19-70 as my five "examples", I can provide someone with an amazing diversity of efforts.

Besides, it won "best song by the DEAD" over at Hook, so it HAS to be the right one, eh?

Just throwing this out there. The Greatest Story Ever Told on http://www.archive.org/details/gd1973-06-09.sbd.patched.barry.93475.sbeok.shnf has Jerry weaving a nice dollop of St. Stephen in to the jam.

I thought of you right after I heard it! hahaha :)

Hey DP--thanks for thinking of me...I was always partial to the GSET-->JBGoode from 2-18-71 (the first I think). I really liked the early versions of this tune, and the ones with "wah wah" by Jerry...but, as with PITB, Donna really ruined it for me later. Not sure about this 73 version though.

Good choice either way.

Dark Star. Dark Star. Did I mention Dark Star? It's the monumental GD cliche that shows why there ARE GD cliches! Personal taste, of course; I'm also a whore for Beethoven's Grosse Fuge and Bach's Chaconne. They belong side-by-side as examples of what we a capable of. It doesn't matter if anyone's listening - the fact is they are THERE.

Thus endeth the sermon.

I will have to give Rachmaninoff's 1st a good listen.

I am more into his piano concertos, with his 3rd up there with my most listened to pieces of music. I use it pre-interview and other times that I require being psyched-up.

lately I have been getting lost in mahler's 1st, 3rd and 6th. Along with devouring schubert.

btw: my classical life improved tremendously the day I joined dime and discovered classical torrents.

I missed this thread ! Glad to see some love for the classics , so to speak . I was the Classical Buyer at the Tower Records in El Toro/Laguna Hills for 24 years . As for the Chaconne, I'm not sure what is all out there, these days ( the classical catalog has shrunk tremendously ),a guitar transcription would be fine, also the Bach/Busoni piano one is great , but the original version (the "Ciaccona") is from the Partita #2, from his Sonatas & Partitas for solo violin , one of Bach's greatest set of works . A guitar ( or lute version ) might be a little easier to listen to, but the recent SACD/CD version by Julia Fischer is an outstanding performance of works, and it is maybe the best violin sound I have heard on disc . ( and she is "easy on the eyes" also )..

The Dead's "signature sound" is so different for so many. You have to take into account how people feel about different eras as well. The Tells and Huckers of the world will gravitate towards the original incarnation of the band and feel a "St Stephen" or "Dark Star" is it...

Later 'heads may feel "Touch of Grey" gets the nod. There is no "right" answer.

However, I am surprised I've seen no one step up for my "quintessential" Dead tune:

SCARLET BEGONIAS.

It's got the sweetness, the jamming, the touch of psychedelia, lyrical mysticism, the dancability...everything I think of when I think of the Dead.

without wanting to state the bleedin obvious i feel i have to play devils advocate and say Dark Star, from the extremely odd single that was wierd even for its time to the 30 minute plus explorations in the early seventies it evolved with the band, although no more than any other song.
If theres one version that encompases everthing that was right ( or should that be wrong ) with the band then its the dark star>me and my uncle>dark star from 24th April 1972 (though they also did that sequence on 5th December 1971 - any others?)

I also immediately thought Dark Star, but then I thought different. IMO, Dark Star best personifies the Dead in their improvisational, psychedelic style. But, they also had/have a serious country, folk, and blues based style mixed in. So, in a song, it's nearly impossible to define the band. Isn't that why we dig them so much? I wholeheartedly agree with the suggestion of DarkStar>Me & My Uncle>DarkStar. It throws the country influence in the mix. But it's still 2 songs. China>Rider and Scarlet>Fire were also thoughts...

Dark Star

if it you mean song song then Uncle John's Band or Truckin.

It has to be a Jerry song imo and it should be a song without a persona such as Jack Straw or Loser - both are characters so don't really represent what the band is all about imo

I could see the wheel as representing what they're all about for sure. Not my favorite or their best but certainly representational

Playin in the Band? Argueably their best jam vehicle, certainly their longest running one but the lyrics are rather dumb

What about the Other One? lyrics are pretty autobiographical and it contains extended jamming

I'll put a vote in for Terrapin Station.

It is one of the first songs I heard, so that may be my bias, but it sucked me in - to the unique universe that is this song. It's got the smell of something mystical and magical going on right from the introduction.

The Lady With A Fan lyrics contain some nice free advice from Hunter regarding romance and relationships, as well as a some genie-in-a-bottle style unfoldings of setting around the fire with a storyteller on any of the many thousands of nights that have come before this one.

And just like the GD, the storyteller's job is to shed light but not to master.

Once we are equipped with this eternal knowledge, off we go to Terrapin! ... which has the whistle screamimg at you to wake up to the Here and Now (quote dire?)

We are then treated to an interesting and orchestrated instrumental section which is conducive to cryptical knowledge transfer in the conciousness of a tripping soul.

If you throw on the album you get At A Siding, during which I once imagined Jerry G like a grinning chesire cat face on the head of some sort of segmented creature, moving in time with the music. (Your Mileage May Vary)

But yeah, I think Terrapin is pretty Dead.

Terrapin is a great insight to describe or lay out a truly GD song .

I'm gonna veer off into perhaps a song not many would think someone may mention in this kind of debate or discussion , and that song is Loser .

Loser has one of the prettiest melodies in the Dead repertoire . I think Sugaree and many songs from the 1972 Garcia release are top notch stuff - The wheel ..

Loser has so many great live versions . Park City UT really lights a fire in me when i hear it ; really , most of that 87 concert is Hot stuff . The Cornell 77 Loser is good too . A couple of 71 s , the year it debuted . In 1978 it was also played with great care ..

Oh , and before i completely forget , Albany NY June 21 1995 ( A solid 1st set , and all aorund good show ] . /

Don't go with jack Straw. Great song but it's a character song. Killing and stealing dont represent what the band is about. Telling an American story does for sure but that's what the band represents to me the most - uniquely American. No offense to our friends across the pond but the band just seems to personify the USA the history, the myth, the reality all of it

Truckin' would have to be the song I would choose for no other reasons than the autobiographical nature of the song. If you ever see the DVD documentary "Anthem To Beauty" the band, Mickey especially, seems to suggest that of Truckin'. It is the one Grateful Dead song that is almost universally recognized by non-heads. It personifies what the band was about, the times it was written in, and the very term "Truckin'" was a very common term used by folks in the early seventies. Roger Crumb, the underground cartoonist of "The Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers" fame even had a drawing of a guy "truckin'". The Dead themselves drew from his famous illustration on the cover of Europe '72 with the cover that suggested Crumb's drawing with the extended legs of the guy. The very term became part of the culture, as did the song. My high school annual from 1971 has several people writing in it for me to "keep on Truckin'", a reference to Truckin'. My vote is for that song. Besides that, how many non heads have you heard from all walks of life declare "What a long strange trip it's been"? in all sorts of circumstances from newspaper headlines to just about anything else. The phrase is part of our culture now.

Dear PM,

Almost at the top of the initial chain of responses. So obvious I didn't feel it needed justifying (hence the "In a word").

Back home many many many years ago there was one 45rpm on the jukebox. Play #100 was "Mr. Charlie" and play #200 was "Cream Puff Wars". These were pre-Truckin' tunes, so I'd have to say "Mr. Charlie" was the Grateful Dead song of the 60s and beyond.

"Mr Charlie" - have no problem with that or any of the other 'short & sweet' upbeat Pigpen numbers ("Next Time You See Me", "Chinatown Shuffle", "Ain't It Crazy", whatever). Not necessarily 'Flagship' GD songs but part of the essential Dead panorama. Ain't knocking any of the other eras of the Dead but to me the Dead were always Pigpen's band - without him there would have been no Dead, or at least not as we know them.

"Mr. Charlie" on the jukebox - I would have died to be able to go to any bar with that on the jukebox.

Keep on Truckin'

Thanx bbbrew! I think I signed more than one high school annual in the early seventies with "What A Long Strange Trip It's Been"! And it was, and STILL IS!
Did you know that "Truckin'" was included in a musical time capsule being beamed into space as part of the Earth's greatest musical compositions in case an alien life form manages to tune in? Everything from Mozart to The Grateful Dead. Long strange trip indeed! As Spock would say, "Fascinating!"
I just hope it's the Europe '72 version. Now THERE'S a new thread for us! What great Grateful Dead composition should be beamed out for alien civilizations to enjoy?

The Europe '72 version for sure. Thats the one that opened the doors of perception for me.
I always thought that the 6-18-74 Other One was pure alien speak. They had to have heard that one.
Spock finds many things fascinating.

Good catch. Thanks for the correction. I used to read them both many years ago. I even got the first name wrong. I was going entirely on memory.... They were both active at the same time, mr. natural and the furry freak brothers.. lapse in memory. Thanks for correcting!

Take your pick but given that the monkey and wolf are both of the animal kingdom and the engineer and smith are of a similar ilk. Methinks, you may want to choose the Monkey.
